Craftsman-style homes were primarily inspired by the work of two architectural brothers around the turn of the 20th century. The Greene brothers were influenced by the English artistic movement (a reaction against the industrial revolution with the aim of promoting artisan and handmade work), as well as by oriental wooden architecture.
What is the Craftsman Style
Stone details . Craftsman style homes are almost always built with a mix of materials. Siding is typically wood (although shingle siding is also common), but pillars and porch foundations are often made of stone. Brick, concrete blocks are also sometimes used.
Tapered columns are one of the most distinctive features of Craftsman homes, despite the variation in detail. The tapered columns, which support the roof of the porch, are usually short and rest on massive stone or brick piers that extend to ground level.
Beams and rafters exposed under deep roofs . This is another one of the very distinctive characteristics of the Craftsman style. This reflects the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement, which sought to make visible the manual work that went into the style.
Craftsman homes are often painted in a nature-inspired palette, to help homes blend seamlessly with their surroundings.
